In the United States, the terms “university” and “college” are loosely interchangeable. They both refer to educational institutions offering bachelor’s degrees (and higher) in a broad range of subjects, ie: University of Illinois at Chicago, Columbia College Chicago. In some instances, several colleges make up a university. For example, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is comprised of eighteen distinct colleges.

Public Institutions are schools that are funded mostly by private means, usually through endowments (donations). Private institutions often have higher tuition fees than their public counterparts. Many of the nation’s most prestigious universities, such as the “Ivy Leagues,” are privately operated.
